Rocket Shādē Safety Precautions
General Safety:
Outdoor fabric shade systems, including Rocket Shādē, are vulnerable to sudden wind and weather conditions. All manufacturers recommend storing movable shade systems during changing weather or when not in use. Rocket Shādē is designed with these considerations in mind, offering convenient setup and storage.
Precautions for Using Rocket Shādē:
Inspect Before Use: Check the Rocket Shādē mounting system every time before use.
Secure the Clamps: Ensure all spinner nut clamps are tightened firmly — don’t hesitate to make them as tight as you can… the tighter the better.
Wind Limitations:
Do not set up Rocket Shādē in winds that may gust over 20 mph.
Do not set up if the wind makes it difficult to lift the shade into position.
Do not leave Rocket Shādē set up overnight.
Do not leave Rocket Shādē dangling from the cantilever.
Do not leave Rocket Shādē set up if high winds are forecast.
Longevity and Warranty:
When used properly, Rocket Shādē components are designed to withstand years of outdoor exposure to the sun. Shadebiz Corp. warrants the Rocket Shādē components and shade for 3 years. If you encounter any issues or component problems under normal use, contact us for assistance. Warranty claims will be handled promptly.
Out of the Box – Rocket Shādē Orientation
Unpack & Inspect
Remove the Rocket Shādē from its packaging and familiarize yourself with the included parts. You should have:
- A fabric-covered carbon fiber umbrella frame.
- A cantilever assembly consisting of three aluminum tubes and two identical clamp
- assemblies holding them together.
- A heavy-duty carry / storage bag.
- A container of parts and labels to complete your installation.
- Inspect the components to ensure nothing is missing or damaged during shipping.
The three aluminum tubes in the cantilever assembly are:
- Rod Holder Tube
- Long Cantilever Tube
- Shade Hanger Tube
(Note: Optional accessories or mounting solutions may include their own instructions.)
To Adjust the Cantilever System
Loosen the Clamps:
- Turn the bright spinner nuts on the tube clamp counterclockwise to loosen. Hold the opposite side spinner nut during loosening or tightening.
- Loosen the nut partially (about 4 rotations) to rotate or extend the tubes within the lamps or loosen the nut further (over 8 rotations) to allow the locking gears in the middle of the clamps to rotate freely.
Position the Tubes:
- To move a clamped tube, press on the integrated wedge (the “OPEN” wedge button feature near the spinner nut.
- Rotate and slide the aluminum tubes into position as shown. This collapsed configuration is recommended for storage and transport.
Note: Rocket Shādē requires no tools for normal operation.
First Time - Favorite Boat Installation
Follow these steps to properly mount and position your Rocket Shādē for desired coverage. Estimate your primary shade position, for example at same level as T-top, over the cockpit and on the centerline.
Step One: Configure the cantilever
Adjust with the cantilever on your lap.
-
Begin at the rod holder end by loosening the spinner nut so parts move freely.
-
Noting your overhead rod holder angle and the distance from centerline, set the rod holder insert at an angle that holds the cantilever arm end approximately 12 inches higher than the T-top (135 degrees is a good starting point)
-
Rotate the rod holder insert tube with its “bottom notch” set to engage the boat’s rod holder inside-pin, thus holding the cantilever arm at a good angle for centerline.
-
Slide the cantilever tubes in or out to avoid conflict with any other boat features.
-
Make the rod holder end tight by turning the spinner nut until solid stop.
-
At the other end of the cantilever, loosen the spinner nut so the parts move freely.
-
Estimate the angle of the shade hanger tube to position it near vertically overhead (80 degrees might be a good starting point)
-
Estimate hanger tube rotation with the “bayonet pin” facing the bow of the boat. The short side of the shade is locked here.
-
Slide the cantilever tubes in or out to move the shade near the T-top.
-
Make the shade hanger end tight by turning the spinner nut until solid stop.
To test the position, lift the cantilever assembly and insert at selected rod holder and check your results. Confirm that the rod holder tube extends out of the bottom of the rod holder so that you can insert the D-ring locking pin to secure in place.
Is the shade hanger tube:
-
at least 2 feet from mounting structures?
-
high enough so no passengers will bump their heads? (arm’s reach overhead)
-
near the centerline of the boat?
-
almost vertical?
This does not need to be perfect to test for shade position.
Step Two: Attach the Rocket Shādē
-
Inspect the shade assembly before mounting. At the top of the shade, note the “PIN PATH” feature on the hanger hub which shows how the shade system is guided into position. (the path is inside the hub)
-
Stand at the bayonet pin side of the hanger near the rod holder and lift the shade system, inserting the fixed hanger tube into the shade’s top hub. Continue sliding the shade upward and over the hanger pin until it stops moving, then rotate clockwise and allow it to drop downward to a set position. This is a stable, gravity-hung position not intended for storing at speeds or left hanging in high winds.
-
Deploy the shade by lifting the shade knob from below and watching the inverted shade open above your head. Looking at the knob and through the fabric center, align the shade tube with the knob hub and lift it into the locked-open position. Tug down gently on the knob to confirm the shade is locked into position.
Occasionally shade setup is helped by maintaining clockwise (tightening) pressure on the knob as it is locked into position.
Step Three: Finishing Touches
Add the included “MAKE TIGHT” warning labels. Remove the label from the adhesive backing and attach to the smooth aluminum tube surface near the clamps.
Apply cantilever preferred-alignment marks using a permanent marker or durable paint, place small dots at the clamp features to note the preferred cantilever position.
Adjusting Position – Tilt and Rotation to reposition the shade for a specific sun position:
-
Remove the shade assembly from the cantilever.
-
Relocate cantilever to another rod holder if needed.
-
Slightly loosen the spinner nut at the rod holder side.
-
Apply pressure to either “OPEN” wedges, loosening the holder tube to rotate the arm left/right in the rod holder, or the vary the tilt angle on the long cantilever arm.
-
Re-tighten the spinner nut and reattach the shade.
Cleaning Instructions
Your Rocket Shādē is made with durable solution-died polyester canvas, which is manufactured for years of outdoor service. Salt-water spray is common on ocean adventures, and a freshwater rinse is usually all that’s needed to keep your shade fresh and attractive. Be sure to dry the shade completely before storage.
To clean polyester canvas - materials needed:
-
Soft-bristle brush or sponge
-
Mild detergent (e.g., dish soap or laundry detergent)
-
Warm water
-
Clean, dry clothes or towels
Instructions:
-
Shake off debris: Remove any loose dirt or dust by gently shaking or brushing them surface with a soft-bristle brush.
-
Mix cleaning solution: Combine warm water with a small amount of mild detergent in a bucket or bowl. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the fabric.
-
Spot clean stains: Dip a sponge or cloth into soapy water and gently scrub any stains or dirt spots. For tougher stains, let the soapy solution sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
-
Wash the entire surface: Use the sponge or brush to clean the entire surface of the canvas, working in circular motions.
-
Rinse thoroughly: Wipe down the fabric with a clean, damp cloth to remove all soap residue.
-
Air dry: Lay the canvas flat or hang it in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely.
Tips and Techniques Summary
When you have the shade system in your favorite position on a favorite boat, make small marker dots at the engaged teeth of the cantilever clamps and at tube locations. Consider a colored Sharpie, or even a spot of nail polish, to show favorite position. Other favorite positions can be added with different color dots.
ALWAYS remove the shade assembly when adjusting the cantilever position. Very often, only the rod holder clamp side needs to be loosened to effectively reposition the shade orientation. The “OPEN” wedge button will release the clamp force significantly.
