Rocket Shādē Safety Precautions

General Safety:

Outdoor fabric shade systems, including Rocket Shādē, are vulnerable to sudden wind and weather conditions. All manufacturers recommend storing movable shade systems during changing weather or when not in use. Rocket Shādē is designed with these considerations in mind, offering convenient setup and storage.

Precautions for Using Rocket Shādē:

  • Inspect Before Use: Check the Rocket Shādē mounting system every time before use.
  • Secure the Clamps: Ensure all spinner nut clamps are tightened firmly — don’t hesitate to make them as tight as you can… the tighter the better.
  • Wind Limitations:
    • Do not setup Rocket Shade in winds that may gust over 20 mph.
    • Do not setup if the wind makes it difficult to lift the shade into position.
    • Do not leave Rocket Shādē set up overnight.
    • Do not leave Rocket Shādē dangling from the cantilever.
    • Do not leave  Rocket Shādē set up if high winds are forecast.

Longevity and Warranty:

When used properly, Rocket Shādē components are designed to withstand  years of outdoor exposure to the sun.  Shadebiz Corp. warrants the Rocket Shādē components and shade for 1 year.  If you encounter any issues or component problems under normal use, contact us for assistance. Warranty claims will be handled promptly.

Out of the Box – Rocket Shādē Orientation

Step One: Unpack and Inspect

Remove the Rocket Shādē from its packaging and familiarize yourself with the included parts. You should have:
  • A fabric-covered carbon fiber umbrella frame.
  • A cantilever assembly consisting of three aluminum tubes and two identical clamp assemblies holding them together (Photo A).
  • A heavy duty carry / storage bag.
  • A container of parts and labels to complete your installation.
Inspect the components to ensure nothing is missing or damaged during shipping. The three aluminum tubes in the cantilever assembly are:
  1. Rod Holder Tube
  2. Long Cantilever Tube
  3. Bayonet-Socketed Shade Hanger
(Note: Optional accessories or mounting solutions may include their own instructions.)

Step Two: Align the Cantilever System

Loosen the Clamps:
  • Turn the bright spinner nuts on the tube clamp counterclockwise to loosen. Hold the opposite side, black spinner nut during loosening or tightening.
  • Loosen the nut partially (about 4 rotations) to adjust the tubes within the clamps, or loosen further (over 8 rotations) to allow the locking gears in the middle of the clamps to rotate freely (Photo A).
Adjust the Tubes:
  • To move a clamped tube, press on the integrated wedge (the black feature near the spinner nut, Photo A).
  • Rotate and slide the aluminum tubes into position as shown (Photo B). This configuration is recommended for storage and transport.

Setting Up Your Rocket Shādē

Follow these steps to properly mount and position your Rocket Shādē for optimal coverage:

Step One: Adjust the Shade Hanger

  1. Estimate Position: Begin at the shade hanger and estimate the angle and rotation of the hanger tube. Use the “bayonet slot” as a reference for overhead position.
  2. Set the Angle: Position the bayonet tube at approximately an 85-degree angle to the long cantilever tube to make it nearly vertical.
  3. Secure the Hanger: Tighten the spinner nut on the clamp assembly to lock the hanger of the cantilever in place.

Step Two: Adjust the Rod Holder End

  1. Align with the Rod Holder: At the rod holder end of the cantilever, locate the internal rod pin.
  2. Insert and Lock:
    1. The cantilever rod holder tube has a large slot that fits over the internal rod pin.
    2. Ensure the rod holder tube protrudes below the rod holder to lock it into place.
  3. Set the Shade Height: Adjust the cantilever’s vertical angle so the bayonet hanger is at least arms reach above your head.
  4. Secure the Rod Holder End: Tighten the spinner nut on the rod holder clamp to lock the position.

Step Three: Mount the Cantilever Assembly and Deploy the Shade

  1. Insert into the Rod Holder: Lift the cantilever assembly and place it into your selected rod holder.
    1. Confirm that the rod holder tube extends out of the bottom of the rod holder for proper locking.  Insert the D-ring locking pin to secure in place.
  2. Prepare for Shade Insertion: Ensure the cantilever is positioned so the shade system can be easily inserted from below.  Adjust position if required.
  3. Insert the Shade:
    1. Stand at the bayonet slot side of the hanger and insert the shade’s center tube into the hanger.
    2. Slide the hanger pin upward and rotate clockwise and downward . Allow the frame to drop into its gravity-hung position.
  4. Deploy the Shade:
    1. Lift the shade handle and watch the inverted shade open above your head.
    2. Looking through the fabric center, align the shade tube with the handle and lift it into the locked open position.  Pull down gently on the handle knob to confirm the shade is locked into position.  Occasionally shade setup is helped by maintaining clockwise (tightening) pressure on the handle knob as the shade is lifted into position.  Repeating the insertion sequence usually sets the lock.

    Step Four: Finishing Touches

      Right or Left-Handed?
      1. The bright colored spinner nut is the most frequently operated feature of the positioning system.  The through-bolt of the clamp assemblies can be reversed if preferred.
Add the MAKE TIGHT warning stickers:
      1. Add the included “MAKE TIGHT” warning labels..  Remove the label from the adhesive backing and attach to the smooth aluminum tube surface near the clamps.
      Apply cantilever preferred-alignment marks:
      1. Using a permanent marker or durable paint, place small dots at the clamp features to note the preferred cantilever position (Photo E)

Adjusting Position – Tilt and Rotation

For most boats, the shade’s opened height and position can align very closely with the T-top. To reposition the shade for a specific sun position:
      1. Remove the shade assembly.
      2. Adjust the cantilever position by slightly loosening the spinner nut at the holder side.
      3. Applying pressure to the clamp wedge, adjust the cantilever to the left/right and tilt angle as needed.
      4. Re-tighten the spinner nut and reattach the shade.

        Cleaning Instructions

Your Rocket Shādē is made with durable solution-died polyester canvas, which is manufactured for years of outdoor service.  Salt-water spray is common on ocean adventures and a freshwater rinse is usually all that’s needed to keep your shade fresh and attractive.  Be sure to dry the shade completely before storage.

        To clean polyester canvas

        Materials Needed:

        • Soft-bristle brush or sponge
        • Mild detergent (e.g., dish soap or laundry detergent)
        • Warm water
        • Clean, dry cloths or towels

        Instructions:

        1. Shake off debris: Remove any loose dirt or dust by gently shaking or brushing the surface with a soft-bristle brush.
        2. Mix cleaning solution: Combine warm water with a small amount of mild detergent in a bucket or bowl. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the fabric.
        3. Spot clean stains: Dip a sponge or cloth into the soapy water and gently scrub any stains or dirt spots. For tougher stains, let the soapy solution sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
        4. Wash the entire surface: Use the sponge or brush to clean the entire surface of the canvas, working in circular motions.
        5. Rinse thoroughly: Wipe down the fabric with a clean, damp cloth to remove all soap residue.
        6. Air dry: Lay the canvas flat or hang it in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading.

        Compliance Information

        UV protection certification:

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV certification applies primarily to lightweight or translucent fabrics.  If you can detect the sun through your shade fabric, then it should have UPF rating (50+ should be optimal).
Rocket Shade uses heavy, solution died polyester canvas which is the same material used for T-tops.  Fabrics this dense are the best UV blockers available and are not expected to need UPF certification.

        Tips and Techniques

        Adjustments:

        1. When you have the shade system in your favorite position on a favorite boat, make small marker dots at the engaged teeth of the cantilever clamps.  Consider a colored sharpie, or even a spot of nail polish, to show the gear teeth alignment for this favorite position.  Other positions can be easily added with different color dots.
        2. ALWAYS remove the shade assembly when adjusting the cantilever position.  Very often, only the rod holder clamp side needs to be loosened to effectively reposition the shade orientation.  The black wedge cap will open the clamp force significantly to make rotation simple (relieve the wedge insert to again clamp tight).  Move and tilt the shade hanger to the desired location and MAKE TIGHT the clamp bolt.
        3. If there is light wind, or if the shade is at an angle, it can be useful to keep a slight clockwise (tighten) pressure on the shade knob to lock it into the open position.  This is because the bayonet pin needs to be fully into the slot for the shade knob to lock.  If you are having trouble locking into position, it may be too windy.

         Warnings:

        1. High winds are a hazard to all shade systems and the Rocket Shādē is no exception.  If you have a problem opening the shade in the wind, it is a good indicator that the wind can cause damage.  Store the shade until the wind reduces.
        2. MAKE TIGHT is important to remember.  The large shade area can act as a sail and react very quickly to wind gusts.
